Formed in 2019, Zirconia comprises singer Ben Kranen., who also writes and produces the original songs, Eileen Chai on the violin and Nigel Peh on the guitar.
Their music style is fun, contemporary electro-pop, and while it is heavily produced with plenty of improvised tracks, there is a spontaneity to their sound, especially during a live performance with ample display of soloing and looping, as well as mixing from the band.
“The major music influences for me are varied,” says Kranen, “On the rock side, there’s Muse and Oasis, while on the EDM/electronic side, there’s Armin van Buuren, Calvin Harris and Daft Punk.” Zirconia’s themes are bright and happy, with a positive optimism in every note.
Aside from musical influences, Kranen draws inspiration from his years of experience dabbling in music from various genres.
“Some people have even told me that they have felt some classical influences in my music, so I imagine it has to be my early years as a classical pianist creeping into my music,” says Kranen.

The idea was first sparked in 2010 when the founder dreamt of cycling round the world with the violin on her back,
to make music with the local community and to spread laughter and optimism to everyone.
More than ten years later, the idea was born.
Together with Chap Chee on the percussion & Mabel Lim on the piano,
the music pieces are melodious, catchy, and can sometimes tickle some smiles
with the variation of timbre, texture and tone of the instruments.
The Violin Travels is part of the Chai360 music ecosystem
where people of all ages & from all walks of life, come together to chat about, collaborate and make music,
with the theme of “Giving Through Music”.
